Absenteeism
The number of days missed from the workplace. It can be attributed to workers’ compensation, short-term disability, long-term disability, sick leave, Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), paid time off (PTO), unpaid leave, and death (premature mortality costs).
Accessory Apartment
A separate living unit inside a single-family home that is a popular senior housing option for people who want to stay in their homes. It is a potential source of caregiving between an older person and a friend, neighbor, or relative, and can provide the convenience of physical closeness, yet privacy. It may also provide additional income for the landlord and low rent for the tenant.
Accreditation
A seal of approval given by a governing body to a housing or service provider. To be accredited, the provider must meet requirements set by the accreditation body and undergo a thorough evaluation to ensure that they meet certain standards of quality.
Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
Basic functional tasks of everyday life that include walking, bathing, eating, personal grooming and toileting. These activities are widely used as a basis for assessing functional status.
Acute Care

Addiction
Physical dependence or psychological dependence on a drug, alcohol or behavior: alcoholism, drug addiction, video games, crime, compulsive overeating, problem gambling, computer addiction, pornography, etc.
Adult Day Care
Provides a planned program that includes a variety of health, social and support services in a protective setting during daytime hours. The adults in this type of care must be mobile, with the possible assistance of a cane, walker or wheel chair, and in most cases must be continent.
Adult-Child Ratio
A ratio of qualified caregivers to children in a child care program.
Advance Directives
A variety of documents that express health care wishes: a Living Will, Health Care Power of Attorney or Proxy, Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care Decisions, Medical Directive, etc.
Airborne Infectious Disease
An individual may get this disease by inhaling bacteria floating in the air on water droplets or dust particles. Pertussis or TB are examples of an airborne infectious disease.
